What are the advantages/disadvantages of buying a .com domain rather than .expert, .co?

The first .com domain name Symbolics.com was registered on March 15, 1985 according to Verisign, the company that now manages the extension. It took two years for the first 100 names to be registered. But between 1995 and 2000 during the era of dot-com bubble, registrations finally did take off, rocketing from 9,005 to more than 20 million. According to Verisign study that can be found here , As of Dec. 31, 2016, the .com domain name base totalled 126.9 million domain name registrations.

Choosing a domain name extension depends on your website’s purpose and the availability of the right .com extension. Price is also an important actor because if it is an existing domain name chances are it is really expensive to own.

Here are some cases, where another domain name extension makes more sense:

  1. Location: If you have a blog about food in London, get a .london.  Or mainly market the Canadian products and services get a .ca.
  2. Sound Match: if your brand name sounds similar with a new TLD, to make your domain sound better. Let’s say your brand was called Chit Chat, then ChitChat.Click or ChitChat.Club sounds catchy.
  3. Industry: Are you a photographer? bikes then use a .photo, .photos, photography. If we were to start over again we would get a .domains instead of .com (We are a domain registrar after all)

The primary advantage of choosing a .com domain name is that it’s the most popular and valuable extension from the after market perspective. Depending on your project, it may or may not make sense to acquire it. It is likely to pay a premium price for the .com you want that is already registered. If you have a large budget it might make sense to go for it.

If you are a tech startup, you might want to consider a .tech or another creative extension such as .company, .business, .online that could work for you and put the bulk of your budget into product development.

Technically there is not much of a difference except the name itself. dot com sounds more of global website and well recognized.

You can compare .com to google as a search engine. There are Bing and Duckduckgo etc but there is nothing like Google in terms of the number of people using it. Similarly dot com is more known over others. For branding purposes, we’d recommend registering the .com in parallel and URL Forwarding it to the main domain.

Whatever you choose as a domain name, the applications, service and technology that a company produces is really the most important consideration.
