Domain Names: What’s In A Name?
Choosing the right domain name to represent a business online is just as important as the stock put into its offline counterpart. Ideally, an existing business should use its already established name or brand names as its domain name. For example, Joe’s Beach Pails should try to obtain a domain name such as www.joesbeachpails.ca or www.joesbeachpails.com . By doing so, Joe is taking advantage of the branding that his company has achieved. People that are already familiar with the "real world" Joe’s Beach Pails company, will easily remember the domain name which will make locating the website more intuitive; they will be more likely to purchase pails from Joe because they trust the brand. On the other hand, it would be more difficult for loyal customers to buy pails from Joe’s Beach Pails if they were not able to intuitively locate the website because Joe chose to name his site www.pailsforyou.ca. Likewise, businesses that start up online also need to carefully consider the domain name that they choose to obtain. It too should reflect and take advantage of company names, trademarks or brands. Whether an already established brick and mortar business or an online startup, choosing the right domain name is but one part of an integrated online marketing plan.
