Protecting Trade Marks with the gTLD System

GTLD domain names, such as “.tips,”  “.photography” and “.guru,” demonstrate that businesses of all sizes from start-ups to mature corporations are now embracing gTLD domain names as a core strategy to build and extend their brands.

With the new gTLD system, a trade mark alone can no longer provide complete protection of a brand. In an attempt to assure full protection, ICANN requires from brand owners to record and have their trademarks authenticated and validated via the Trademark Clearing House and the sunrise and claims system. The Trademark Clearing House provides a way for brand owners to protect valuable trademarks and maintain control of their brands.

Brand owners should review their trade mark portfolios and ensure that their most important brands are adequately protected. We advise all our clients to engage in the protection mechanisms established by ICANN in addition to the previous legal mechanisms that were used before.

SiberName (, is one of the most trusted Canadian resources for domain registration and web hosting. We released six new gTLD’s for public registration on March 19th, 2014: .BUILDERS, .EMAIL, .SOLUTIONS, .SUPPORT, .TRAINING, and .UNO

The new domain names are available for online registration through SiberName’s Domain Name Registration webpage and also through the new gTLD web page.
